Happy Sparrow Cafe (Part 2)

(Original Review -- January 2012)

After coming back from Texas in August, my kolache fix remained unsatisfied. Luckily, Happy Sparrow Cafe had what I wanted. As of this post, they remain the only spot to get kolaches (to my knowledge) in the Portland area.

With the abundance of cuisine that Portland has to offer, I'm a bit surprised kolaches haven't become more widespread in the area. It's basically baked dough with savory or sweet filling inside. Happy Sparrow has several varieties (savory or sweet) for sale each day. I got three different kolaches this time.

The Texas Hotlink ($3) was easily my favorite. Zenner's double smoked pork sausage, jalapenos, and Tillamook cheddar. Chewy oval-shaped roll encasing everything. Awesome, pleasurable spice from the hot link and jalapenos. I would eat this one every day.

The Happy Bird Bun ($3) featured turkey maple sausage, scrambled eggs, and Tillamook cheddar. Interesting to see an egg "patty" inside, instead of loose scrambled eggs, but likely done to avoid a mess when eating. This one would be even more amazing with the hot sauce of your choice.

Finally, I tried the Czech Poppyseed ($3), a vegan option and deemed the "original Czech kolache." Poppyseed filling, lemon zest, chocolate nibs, soy milk, and cinnamon. Another good kolache here that wasn't too sweet and had a slight refreshing note from the lemon.

Happy Sparrow still has a full espresso bar here. Tons of coffee choices to choose from.

If you're not eating the kolaches right away, it was suggested to pop them in the microwave for about 15 seconds before eating.

Since I'm quite a ways from Texas, Happy Sparrow Cafe remains my go-to spot for kolaches. I definitely recommend trying this spot out! 8.5/10
