Frites

Frites is located on Granville Street in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

This place wasn't here on my previous Canada visit, and with frites and poutine available, I had to try it for science. Frites is also known for Belgian Waffle sandwiches. Perhaps I'll give that a go next time.

This was my first food stop in Canada, so obviously, poutine was a must. Their "double-layered" poutine ranges from $5 (small) to $11 (large). You can get gourmet toppings, such as pulled pork or beef chili, but I opted for the traditional (without toppings).

I thought the fries were very good, nicely seasoned. The gravy was the big star, very flavorful. I counted about four mini-scoops of cheese curds piled into the small poutine. I'd be lucky to get the equivalent of one mini scoop in the United States. I didn't get squeaky curds, which may have been the only minor drawback on the poutine.

They advertise something called "Suicide Sauce," so I naturally tried that for science. Unfortunately, it simply tasted like Frank's RedHot sauce in flavor and heat level. If there ever was a time for a panda facepalm, that was it.

All things considered, it was a good first experience. Next time, it will be waffle sandwiches, more poutine, and/or sampling some other sauces. 7.5/10
