Adjacent to the Kapālama Canal, Yohei Sushi has that hole-in-the-wall feel, near other notable places like Costco, Best Buy, and Home Depot, yet hidden enough in the back when on Dillingham itself.
I joined my family for a nice Friday lunch to get away temporarily from the work grind.
Inside, the place is charming and a bit upscale. There's a sushi bar and counter to the right, with several tables throughout.
The menu has several teishoku (set meal) options and several sushi choices. Bottomless water and green tea are served. There may also be weekend or seasonal specials.
I got the Maguro Zuke Don bowl ($21): Ahi tuna marinated in shoyu and other secret ingredients, tamago (egg), and fresh cucumber all on top of sushi rice, with some pickled ginger and wasabi. The dish comes with a side of miso soup.
Delicious, fresh tuna that melts in your mouth. A pleasing, lovely marinade that complements. Fresh cucumber slices, while simple, give that refreshing feel and crunch contrast the dish needed. When paired with some wasabi and shoyu, it's simply really good food and done right.
My mom loved her Ahi Steak Teishoku ($26), and while I forgot to take a photo, it really looked like the menu picture. A thick piece of ahi tuna, cooked perfectly, still moist and tender.
Incredible service here, probably some of the best service I've had at a restaurant that I can think of. When mom wanted to take her second piece of ahi tuna home, the server gave her some extra free white rice to go with the takeout.
Even between four people, the total came to about $104, well worth it for the quality and overall experience.
Yohei Sushi may be one of my new favorite spots on Oahu. High praise, but to me, very well earned. 9.5/10
