On a recent short trip to Portland, I wanted to check out a new pod - and the Heist ended up being a gem of a selection. With over a dozen food carts covering a wide range of cuisines, a full bar inside, and ample covered/indoor seating, the current setup of Heist is a lovely destination spot.
Fun fact: The Heist food pod is the home of a former U.S. Bank. There was an actual heist at this spot in 2010, hence the name. The old bank vault is still there as a museum of sorts. Behind the current bar are old safety deposit boxes. A bar window is where a drive-thru bank teller used to be. Heck of a transformation, yet retaining some of the old vibe.
Going on a Friday night with a full crowd, it's probably best to get there early. If not, hope you'll get parking on the side streets in the residential areas, then walk over.
When I saw the name Cookie McCakeface, that alone made it a great reason to stop by. Their menu has a mix of everyday options and rotating cookies. All are baked to order, so I'd recommend ordering here first for your dessert, then get your entree from another cart.
I ordered their CCC (chocolate chip cookie; $7), self-explanatory. It probably was a good 10-15 minutes before I got my order.
Yes, their cookie is pricey and there will be a wait, but it was huge, thick, and well worth it. It's been a few decades since I last had that fresh oven-baked chocolate chip cookie my mom used to make, and Cookie McCakeface's version blew that cookie out of the water.
On your bite, you'll break through that well-done, almost crusty exterior, and land in this very soft, moist, interior with tons of chocolate chips in every bite. Easily one of the food highlights of my trip.
Cookie McCakeface will open from 12-8 on Wednesday through Sunday. Given the baking times, it wouldn't surprise me if they close up shop a bit before 8. Probably ideally won't want to keep baking orders of cookies after closing, but hopefully they will squeeze in every sale they can. After all, a food cart is a tough business and every sale matters.
It's rare for me to rave this much about a cookie, but yes, an elite cart here folks. 9.5/10
