When searching for new, unique places to eat in Vancouver, Peaked Pies made the list for its Aussie offerings. Any savory pie starts at $12.50 and, for about $6 more, includes a scoop of mashed potatoes, mashed peas, and gravy on top to make it a fuller meal. They even serve beer here; three taps for draft beer, plus several other cans.
The traditional beef/gravy pie is an option, but my eyes locked in on the Hopper: Kangaroo, sage, thyme, and a Cabernet Merlot-balsamic reduction. Since we took this order to go, we opted for no mashed potatoes, peas, and extra gravy; we just got the pie.
Kangaroo is a lean meat, but it stayed very tender and juicy when bathing in a gravy and wine-balsamic reduction. Sage and thyme elevated it even more. This was a flavor-bomb and was the best dish I had enjoyed on the trip to that point.
My mom liked her Spinach Roll, but it felt too earthy and grassy for my liking.
Instead, I also ordered the Lamington ($5.25), a traditional Australian dessert that I had wanted to try for years. It's basically a vanilla sponge cake dipped in chocolate and tossed in coconut flakes. It can be a messy item, but still delicious. Even my mom, who isn't a big coconut fan, liked this one.
Very friendly service here. The best chance for parking generally would be to find a parking lot in the area. Street parking is the only other option, and it can get crowded even on a weekday.
Peaked Pies will again be on my list on any return trip to the area. 9.25/10
