RJ Skillets

RJ Skillets is located on NE Alberta Street, in between NE 25th and NE 26th Ave, in Portland, Oregon.

Since there are not a lot of Mexican or brunch options where I live these days, I wanted to find a spot in Portland that could check off both boxes. Enter RJ Skillets, specializing in Oaxacan cuisine.

Their menu has standard breakfast items, but also the Mexican breakfast/brunch options like Mole Enchiladas and Chilaquiles. Desserts include Tres Leches Cake and Churros.

There's a menu section for the different types of protein choices, ranging from carnitas to brisket.

At any breakfast or brunch spot, I must try the coffee ($3.50, bottomless). Very good here, always a plus.

Since the place is RJ "Skillets", I went with the Scrambled Hash Skillet ($14): choice of meat (I picked carnitas), sauteed with potatoes, topped with eggs, melted cheddar, pico de gallo, and queso fresco in a cast iron skillet. It comes with three handmade corn tortillas on the side.

Solid meal here. Juicy and tender carnitas, perfectly cooked potatoes with a crust forming on the exterior. Three warm tortillas became the perfect portion for the amount of food in the skillet.

There were also three different salsas to choose from. The orange one was more mango-based and mild. The green one was tomatillo-based and also mild. The darker orange salsa had a habanero kick to it, easily the spiciest of the three.

Excellent service here. Our server always made sure our water glasses or coffee mugs were filled.

While Portland has an abundance of brunch spots, if you're in the Alberta neighborhood, RJ Skillets is a great morning stop! 8.5/10
