Helser's on Alberta

(UPDATE 5/4/2020: Helser's has closed permanently due to the COVID-19 pandemic)

Helser's on Alberta is located at the corner of NE 16th and Alberta in Portland, Oregon.

If you're a breakfast and brunch type of person, NE Alberta Street has a handful of them. This time, I ventured a couple blocks down from Tin Shed. This time, I decided on a late brunch.

Helser's has your typical breakfast and brunch menu, filled with hashes, benedicts, French toast, and pancakes. There's also a Dutch Baby (German) pancake that will take about 20 minutes of cooking time.

I stuck with my usual go-to brunch: Eggs Benedict. I opted for the Spinach, Mushroom, and Tomato Benedict ($9.50). Instead of an English muffin, ciabatta is used as the base, so it looks more like a crostini. Fresh hollandaise. I honestly prefer the English muffin, as this made the dish look even smaller than it was. Interesting thing on the potatoes: they appeared to be a hybrid of slightly mashed home fries. I liked the spuds. Decent overall, especially after putting hot sauce on this.

I also saw a Scotch Egg ($3.50) on the menu and had to order one. It's a hard boiled egg wrapped in ground bratwurst, lightly breaded, and then deep fried. It's split open for presentation and served with horseradish cream. Freakin' delicious, and I'd want several more of these before passing out from a food coma.

The place was fairly packed, but I barely had any wait dining by myself. Larger parties may face a decent wait time, depending on the time and how busy the place already is.

Good experience overall. I'd go back. 7.75/10
