Ex Novo Brewing

Ex Novo Brewing is located on N Flint Avenue in Portland, Oregon.

Ex Novo is a nonprofit brewery, only keeping money to keep operations going. The company donates all their profits to various local organizations.

Several Ex Novo beers on tap here, roughly a dozen. I went with a pint of the Dynamic Duo Imperial IPA ($5.50). Packs a nice West Coast-style experience. Just right at 8% and 77 IBUs. A combination of Jarrylo and Centennial hops produce a balanced citrus, floral, and refreshing beer.

I then ordered an Albuquerque Dog ($8), adding their soup of the day (beer cheese soup) for a dollar more. It starts with a Sabrett's dog, then add bacon, avocado, lots of cheese, and Hatch green chile. A side of me wanted the cheese melted on there instead, but otherwise, it was very good. The mild Hatch chile, just FYI, was hidden under all the other toppings. The bun itself was warm and inviting.

The beer cheese soup was outstanding. Full-on cheesy and a bit of tang from the beer. Served piping hot as it should be. I ended up pouring some of the soup on the hot dog for an additional win. Because science.

Other scrumptious menu items include a Pork Meatball Banh Mi ($10), Grilled Cheese ($7.50), and Mac & Cheese ($9). You can even add the Hatch chile to your grilled cheese for $1 more or to the mac for $2 more.

Ex Novo serves great beer and great food! 8.5/10
