On my last day in Seattle, it was mainly about sweet treats. Since I now can't handle dairy like I used to, Frankie & Jo's popped up as a possible spot for vegan ice cream. It had great reviews, and since University Village had a lot of other shops to kill time, it was a good opportunity to try this spot.
Frankie & Jo's started in 2011. Their first scoop shop opened at Capitol Hill, and they now have three locations. They want to promote and sell quality vegan, gluten-free ice cream, reducing dependence on animals - as normally you'd see cow's milk in ice cream.
I initially misjudged when the place would open. Google had said 11 AM, but their website and front door state they open at noon. Oops.
When Frankie & Jo's did open, there was maybe one other customer inside, no wait. Bright interior.
There are likely some everyday flavors and seasonal options. More everyday flavors might include Supercookies & Cream, Mint Brownie, and Brown Sugar Vanilla.
In spring, there were three seasonal flavors. I went with the mini scoop of For the Love of Lemon ($6.44): Vanilla bean ice cream base, lemon juice, and zest, folded with house-made lemon curd and chunks of lemon shortbread cookies.
For a vegan ice cream, outstanding. Very refreshing, with the lemon popping throughout the experience. The shortbread cookies provided that extra dimension of texture against the creamy ice cream.
It's a bit pricey for a small scoop, but a nice experience overall. They also don't take cash, so be ready to pay with your card.
Not in the area? It appears you can order their ice cream online and have it shipped to your door.
If you're in Seattle, Frankie & Jo's ice cream is definitely worth a try. 8.5/10
