Yes everyone, I'm back with another round of blog posts after several months not traveling. This time, my Mom and I spent a couple days in New Orleans. Hadn't been there in over 30 years, so it was time.
After a layover in Denver, we flew into New Orleans in the early afternoon. Seeking a late lunch or early dinner - whatever was needed to adjust to the Central time zone - Parkway was the first stop on our adventures.
Even between lunch and dinner, Parkway had quite a few people. There's a parking lot to enter into next to the building. An attendant will tell you where to park if you're dining in, as there are marked stalls for pickup orders. We managed to at least avoid a line that formed after we placed our order.
Parkway is known for their po'boys, sandwiches traditionally having roast beef or fried shrimp and on French bread. Small po'boys are 5 inches and the large is 10 inches. Many people get theirs "dressed", which at Parkway means lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayo.
The James Brown ($14.39 for a small) is one of Parkway's signatures, combining their roast beef and fried Gulf shrimp in one sandwich. I got mine dressed. It's hands down one of my favorite meals on the trip, and I was only my first stop in. Juicy, flavorful, shredded roast beef with tons of gravy. Shrimp are perfectly seasoned. The bread itself isn't toasted, so it's chewy and very soft, yet does its best to hold everything together.
We got an order of fries ($5.29) which was fine for what they were. Nothing special here, but solid.
For our drinks, Mom tried their sweet tea ($3.29), which certainly lived up to that name. Refreshing and goes well with any meal.
As for me, I couldn't pass up Barq's root beer in a glass bottle ($3.59). It had been years since I even had Barq's root beer, and I previously only had it in a can or plastic bottle. There's a bottle opener right next to the order window. Barq's still tastes the same and I enjoyed every drop.
To finish off our experience, we enjoyed Parkway's signature bread pudding ($7.49), with their sweet creme rum sauce on the side. Moist, delicious, and a generous portion. We ended up saving most of this as our treat back at the hotel.
I came to Parkway with high expectations, and it met all of them. We didn't have to wait too long for the food, and there were a lot of pictures and memories on the wall to stare at while we waited.
Heck of a way to start my NOLA adventures. I can see why Parkway is consistently mentioned as a destination po'boy spot. 9.25/10
