Bon Bánh Mì

Bon Bánh Mì is located on SE 122nd Ave in Portland, Oregon.

Bridgetown Bites did a wonderful post on this already, so I'll point you there for a history of the space, research on the spot, and their overall thoughts. There were rumblings about Bon Bánh Mì from late last year. Their soft open was on August 11, with an official open five days later.

After seeing a lot of Hawaii banh mi prices, the much cheaper banh mi here was already a breath of fresh air. Prices range from $6.50 to $7.50 for one.

When I heard Bon Bánh Mì made their own bread, I knew I had to come here. Never underestimate the power of a good bread in a banh mi - or any sandwich.

I treated myself to the #8 Crispy Pork Belly banh mi ($7.50), which also includes homemade mayo, pickled carrots, fresh cucumber, jalapeño, and cilantro. I opted to take it back to the hotel, but before doing so, we stopped off at a couple more places before I had a chance to eat.

And even a good 30-40 minutes later, when I finally dug in, the banh mi was still awesome. Bread soft, yet easily holds all the good stuff inside. Pork still juicy with that slightly crispy skin. Wonderful crunch from the veggies, and the pickled carrots were done just right. The creamy homemade mayo brought everything together. I had to share some of that bread with Mom, and she too enjoyed it.

If anything, I'd have wanted a little more pork and veggies in the banh mi, but that price to me is unbeatable and makes up for it.

With many banh mi options in Portland, and with locals already raving about it, Bon Bánh Mì should have no problem sticking around for years to come. 9/10
