Basically, an experience so nice, I had to get it twice - at two different spots.
Cafe Du Monde needs no introduction, having opened during the Civil War and still serving its world-famous beignets and coffee, whether black chicory coffee or a cafe au lait.
The last time I was in New Orleans, we were part of a World War II group visiting various forts and other landmarks across multiple states. One of the few memories I had of the trip was Cafe Du Monde and its beignets. Mom only recalled the beignets not being warm when she last had them.
When we went to the French Quarter spot, it was still before 8 AM, yet there were a lot of people dining in. Live jazz music already playing on the sidewalk. We managed to get a seat, where a server took our order. Ticket times were extremely fast and we got everything in 2-3 minutes.
Our order of three beignets ($4.53) were warm, with a hill of powdered sugar on each. Each irregularly rectangular shaped treat had a slightly crunchy exterior. Slightly dense, yet puffy inside. I can see why some people compare this to a funnel cake.
The sweet beignets pair wonderfully with a black chicory coffee ($3.60 small). Chicory root is blended with coffee grounds to help stretch the coffee, adding a woody flavor and reducing the bitterness. I went with just the black coffee because I normally don't add milk to my coffee anyway, and I've already had this chicory coffee blend many times when grabbing the usual orange tin in a place like World Market.
Mom enjoyed her hot chocolate ($3.60 small), although I forgot to grab a picture of it.
And even on the trip home a few days later, I made sure to find the Cafe Du Monde location there. It's past the security checkpoint near concourses A and B. Since we were heading to concourse C, we went out of our way to get beignets one more time.
Same menu and prices. Same warm beignets and coffee. All an outstanding experience. So even if you just had a layover here, you won't miss out on these treats.
While everything is a to-go order here, we ate the beignets at a nearby table where people would grab cream, sugar, and napkins.
At least this time, I managed to sneak a couple pictures of a worker making the beignet dough.
Yes, Cafe Du Monde is a tourist spot, but it's a tourist spot for a reason. It's a beignet Mom and I both enjoyed and would go back to get in a heartbeat. 9.25/10
