Gumbo Shop

Gumbo Shop is located on N St Peter within the French Quarter in New Orleans, Louisiana.

During the time I visited, several streets within the French Quarter had some construction going on. That didn't stop me and Mom from walking around anyway. Gumbo was even high on Mom's list to try, so Gumbo Shop, founded in 1948, was a natural stop.

Despite the grandiose feel on the inside, it's very casual attire for the patrons. Not many people were dining when we got a table around 11:30 AM.

Many of the usual New Orleans dishes can be found here, plus daily specials.

Seeking a good New Orleans food experience, our server Shawn said we could order a trio of gumbo (all cups) and mish-mash side orders how we liked. Consider it done.

The food started with a small nightstick of French bread. Naturally goes well with any of the items we had.

A trio of gumbo ($20.99) started everything, where we got cups of the seafood, chicken-andouille, and duck gumbos. The duck gumbo was a special that day. Mom and I loved the seafood gumbo the best, followed by the rich duck, then the chicken-andouille. Seafood just had that extra flavor boost that the other two didn't have. The duck gumbo had a richer and more soulful experience than the chicken-andouille. Any gaminess that the duck might have had got masked fairly well, so even Mom enjoyed it.

We also ordered a side of the crawfish etouffee ($10.49). It was good, yet we kept going back to the gumbo each time. Lesson learned, frankly. Since Gumbo Shop has "gumbo" in its name, figure that's what they are known for.

The Alligator Sausage ($9.49) was outstanding, and Mom said it had similar qualities and flavors to a Portuguese sausage. It was served with a sauce that included orange marmalade, ketchup, and creole mustard. Very orange-forward that cut through the richness of that sausage.

Gumbo Shop also sells their own pepper blends and hot sauces, if you want to take souvenirs home.

Another awesome New Orleans food experience here. If you're staying in the French Quarter, Gumbo Shop is a solid spot for local grub. 7.5/10
