I wanted to visit one Alabama spot when driving back to Louisiana, and since we already had a great lunch in Florida, something sweet seemed appropriate. After some research, Cammie's seemed to be the perfect local spot as the temperature reached the mid-80s, pretty hot for April.
Cammie's is near a corner in a peaceful neighborhood. The area has the small-town feel, with narrow lanes, but filled with modern buildings. Cammie's sticks out for retaining the old school look, from the building to the signs.
The business has roots going back to 1969, when Edwin Widemire opened his namesake ice cream shop at this spot. In 1998, Cammie Wayne, who had worked for Widemire since she was 16, bought the business. Cammie then started making her own ice cream in 2011 and purchased a creamery in 2017. Cammie's has since opened two more ice cream shops, including one at their creamery site.
It was mid-afternoon when we arrived. Right away, I figured it was the right spot because I saw multiple families bringing their kids for a sweet treat.
As you'd expect, very cheap prices here compared to the states I usually frequent. Single scoops are generous and still under $4. Even a junior sundae is under $5.
There are around 16 flavors available at the time of our visit. Some are everyday flavors, while others rotate.
Creole Praline is one of their signature, everyday flavors, so I got a single scoop ($3.65). As the name suggests, a creamy and delicious vanilla-based ice cream with pralines inside. With the praline having that fudgy, yet sugary texture, it complemented the vanilla ice cream base well.
Mom got a junior sundae with Double Rich Chocolate ice cream, hot fudge, and whipped cream ($4.16). Chocolate has always been Mom's favorite flavor, and she tackled that ice cream with gusto. Serving it in a traditional glass tulip sundae dish made it even better.
This is the type of place that creates many memories, especially for the kids. There's a lot of vintage items for people to look at while enjoying a sweet treat.
There's not a lot of parking in the parking lot, so I'm sure people have parked elsewhere and walked over if need be. We got lucky with a spot closest to the street.
A lovely experience at Cammie's, and while I doubt my travels will take me back through Mobile, I'll definitely remember the ice cream and the place's old-school vibe. 9.25/10
