For years, I had wanted to drive along the Gulf and hit the two easternmost states that I hadn't yet been to: Alabama and Florida. Flying into New Orleans gave me the chance, with Pensacola roughly three hours away by car.
I had a few spots on my list to eat at in Florida, but ultimately settled on this taqueria that had hundreds of positive reviews. Having lived near Portland, I'm no stranger to a good food truck, and seeing this at a Shell station, I got even more excited.
We got there before it opened, so we killed time nearby before returning. Even 20 minutes after opening, there were people not only in line to order, but others had already gotten their food. Good news here, as that implies lightning-fast ticket times.
Typical taqueria food truck menu here, from tacos to burritos. There are seven meats to choose from, and I wanted to maximize my protein experience. It's a two food-truck setup, with the grill in between. We just followed where the line was.
I got three regular tacos ($3.25 each). One al pastor, one lengua, and one campechano, which is an asada/chorizo mix. All tacos were equally delicious, each protein diced small for easy eating. My favorite was the al pastor. Add some diced pineapple, and the sweetness enhances the pork that much more.
All salsas were also outstanding. My favorites included the pico de gallo and a salsa that likely had some habaneros in it.
My Mom enjoyed her tostada ($6.50) with carne asada. Mom initially saw an item and thought it was a salad, but we were quickly set straight. It has a fried corn tortilla on the bottom, with beans, choice of meat, lettuce, onion, tomato, queso fresco, and avocado. Since Mom wanted me to eat some, I opted for no sour cream. Succulent carne asada, refreshing veggies, and all salsas paired well. It's a generous serving, making this a steal.
Finally, we ordered a mango agua fresca ($3), which came in a large styrofoam cup to keep everything cold and insulated. Perfect refreshment on a warm day. This one felt like a velvety mango concentrate slightly diluted but still a flavor bomb.
Mom said this was her favorite meal on the trip, and she loved how finely diced all the meats were for easy eating.
There's a reason Taqueria El Asador has overwhelmingly positive reviews. It starts with quality ingredients, creating great dishes with those ingredients, and building a large following. 9.25/10
