For my final dinner spot on this trip, I wanted to get one final order of chargrilled oysters. I picked Acme Oyster House's Metairie spot since it was outside the bustling French Quarter and wasn't too far from our hotel.
If Acme Oyster House sounds familiar to food challenge fans, Adam Richman ate 15 dozen oysters during the first season of Man v. Food, filming it at the French Quarter location. Richman later noted in interviews - and a future MvF episode - that this made him hate oysters for a long time before eating them again in a MvF episode in Charleston.
Getting to Acme around 3:30 on a Sunday, this location was still fairly busy. Our table gave me a good seat of the chargrilled oyster action.
The half dozen chargrilled oysters ($17.99) here were amazing, served with lemon wedges and French bread slices. I preferred these over Drago because Acme's oysters were larger and more plump, had more garlic butter, and seemed to have more flavor overall. Whether it was the cheese blend, the garlic butter, or both, Acme's chargrilled oysters left the more lasting impression.
Mom and I also enjoyed a cup of Chicken and Andouille Sausage Gumbo ($5.99). I even liked this gumbo better than its counterpart at Gumbo Shop. Had more flavor depth and a lovely dark brown color from the roux. Rice perfectly cooked. Maybe it mattered that I had this closer to dinner time and Gumbo Shop's was enjoyed at lunch, but the only way to confirm is to go back again.
I couldn't leave New Orleans without having a Sazerac ($11), a traditional New Orleans cocktail. Acme's version includes Sazerac Rye, Herbsaint, Angostura Bitters, Peychaud's Bitters, and simple syrup, garnished with a lemon twist. Unfortunately, the lemon twist seemed to go AWOL before getting to my table. A strong drink but I liked it. If you like an Old Fashioned, you'll probably also like this one.
Excellent service overall. She was very patient with us while we finalized our choices - pretty much everything other than the oysters.
Acme Oyster House is a must-stop for oysters and other local cuisine. 9/10
