The Ugly Mug Diner

The Ugly Mug Diner is located on Washington Street in Salem, Massachusetts.

Right after getting off the plane in Boston, my mom and I were hungry and made our way to Salem. Sure, we would get our fill of witch history afterward, but breakfast called first.

We initially planned to try a different breakfast spot not far from Ugly Mug, but after literally parking in front of the diner and quickly seeing the menu, we were sold.

Drip coffee is $2.25 and comes in one "ugly mug" size. The beans are from Atomic Coffee Roasters in Massachusetts.

Joe's Fish Prints Dueling Crustaceans ($15) is a crabcake benedict with lobster aioli. And these aren't tiny crabcakes, either. A very hearty portion here, with crunchy bread crumbs on the crabcakes. The hollandaise is house-made. I got regular home fries, which were wonderfully seasoned.

I also tried the Greek Omelet ($7), which has tomato, feta, spinach, red onions, and fresh basil. Sweet potato hoe fries were the option here, just for science. Another quality meal, but at the end of the day, the crabcake benedict stole the show.

Ugly Mug Diner serves breakfast and lunch. Full espresso bar available. There are even specialty sodas if you want to try those.

The chalkboard also has daily specials.

The people next to us had the Victoria & John's Father Daughter Breakfast ($17). Three pancakes, four eggs, four slices of bacon, an order of hash, and one parfait. Ideal to split, or have one very hungry person tackle it.

There's Breakfast Poutine here. Not sure offhand if it includes cheese curds, but they use home fries instead of french fries, add a fried egg, and top it with red eye gravy.

The Ugly Mug Diner was a surprise find, and one a totally recommend going to! 9/10
