Betty's Burgers

Betty's Burgers is located on University Ave in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Located within walking distance of UH-Manoa, across from the original Beer Lab HI spot, Betty's opened around December 2019, replacing Greek Corner, a restaurant that had been there since the 1990s.

Betty's has that 1950s diner look, focusing on small smash burgers, fries (or onion rings), and shakes. Various burgers on the menu, all served a la carte.

Naturally, I got the Spicy burger ($6.99), which has pepperjack cheese, jalapenos, lettuce, tomato, onion, and sriracha mayo. The beef patties are 1/4 pound and the buns are from Liliha Bakery.

It's a very good burger, with fresh veggies, melted cheese, and a juicy patty. Great choice on the bun, as it holds together even with all the mayo and other juicy loveliness in between. Pickled jalapenos added some kick, while the sriracha mayo brought a light spice jab of its own.

It is a small burger, though, so many people likely won't get full by ordering just a burger.

Thus, I also got a side of onion rings ($3.89), which were wonderfully made. Excellent crunch on the outside. The onion, while crunchy, was cooked through. You'll probably get a mix of smaller onion rings and larger ones. Each have a fairly thick coat of fried batter on it, as opposed to a simple dusting and a dunk into the oil. A bit of greasiness, but not overly so. Perfect golden brown.

My friend, who has already enjoyed the Spicy, got the Double Bacon Delux with Cheese ($8.50), which is basically their regular Delux with Cheese ($6.25), plus an extra patty and bacon. I let him have some onion rings, so he wanted some tartar sauce with that ($0.50 extra).

Shakes would probably be the next thing for us to try. Looking on Yelp, at this time they may come in a 20 oz (approximate) to-go up and can be topped with whipped cream.

As for the fries, I again turned to Yelp, and they look slightly thick (but not steak fries) and excellently seasoned.

It took maybe 5-7 minutes to get our order, which is pretty good. There should be parking either behind the building or on a side street.

Betty's Burgers gets a solid thumbs up from me. I'll definitely be back. 8.5/10
