180 Xurros & Xocolata

180 is a Xurro (churro) and Xocolata (drinking chocolate) shop on NE Broadway in Portland, Oregon.

180 is a collaboration with chef Jose Chesa (from his restaurant, Ataula); his wife, Cristina; and business partner David Martin. The menu centers around its vegan-friendly xurros (in various forms) and drinking chocolate.

While the xurros here also come in chocolate-covered form (xurros bañados) and stuffed xurros (with dulce de leche or crema catalana), I got three of their regular cinnamon-sugar laced xurros for starters ($3.75). They are crunchy, fried to perfection, and given a signature loop.

Along with the xurros, I sampled each of the three dipping sauces (each $2 for a 2 oz container). My favorite, by far, was the lemon curd, being slightly tart, refreshing, and lively on the palate. For something more rich and indulgent, the thick caramel and roasted peanut dipping sauce is the way to go. Lastly, the marshmallow swirl is a lighter dipping sauce that still allows the xurro to keep center stage.

Of course, I couldn't leave without trying the drinking chocolate ($4 for a 4 oz cup). It may not be a lot, but holy damn it's a rich and thick chocolaty ride. If you are in any way, shape, or form a chocolate fan, this is the proper way to enjoy it.

The seating area seats probably a dozen people, although an empty side room (at least at the time of my visit in April) may be available to seat about a dozen more people.

180 is generally open from 8 AM to 4 PM daily.

180 is a heck of a destination to feed that sweet tooth. 9/10
