Los Reyes De La Torta has several locations around Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona. This blog post covers the spot on E Southern Avenue in Tempe, Arizona.
Before leaving Arizona, I wanted to fit in at least one place that was on the Phoenix episode of Man v. Food. I picked their Tempe location because it was close to Sky Harbor airport.
I arrived around the middle of the afternoon, before the dinner rush. I was quickly led to a seat and given top-notch service.
Salsa and chips are complementary here, but I chose not to fill up on it.
Full-sized tortas here are generally about 7" long, with the mini around 4" to 4.5". The Del Rey ($10.75 full; $8.50 mini) has the kitchen sink of ingredients going on. Ham, melted cheese, refried beans, pork, sirloin, breaded beef, omelet, sausage, Mexican sausage, tomato, onions, avocado, and chipotle sauce. It feels like you're getting served breakfast, lunch, and dinner all in one sandwich. The chipotle sauce is both in the sandwich and on the side.
The smoky chipotle sauce and all the veggies helped cut through the rich, heavy proteins. It was a towering sandwich, one where many people would get their money's worth.
The torta comes with a side of Ruffles potato chips. I'd rather eat the tortilla chips at the end of the day, but that's just me.
Only because I had gone for the gusto on food and beer earlier in the day, I wish I stuck with the mini torta. On a regular day, I'd easily wolf down the full sandwich.
The server tried to sell me on one of their refreshing agua fresca drinks, but I opted for water. I pretty much had no more room. Even pandas have limits.
If you're seeking a place for tortas, I definitely recommend Los Reyes De La Torta! 8.25/10
