South

South is located at the Hawthorne Asylum pod (SE 11th and Madison) in Portland, Oregon.

Hawthorne Asylum is quickly becoming one of my favorite pods. Good amount of street parking nearby, and a large array of cuisines to choose from. If you're entering the pod from Madison, South is in the back right of the lot, near the larger covered seating area.

As the name implies, South features food from the American South. Po'Boys and two types of plates, whether fried chicken or pulled pork, are regular menu items. Sides include cornbread, black-eyed peas, coleslaw, and grits.

My friend and I both love spice, and we had to get the Nashville Hot Chicken special ($13 with one side). We got the chicken over Texas toast, and ordered a side of fried green tomatoes.

While I've never had the real deal (yet), this seemed like a proper introduction to hot chicken. Tons of smoky spice on the breading, and a burn that gradually increases and lingers for a lengthy period. Make no mistake, it's a spicy bird, and it won't be for everyone.

The fried green tomatoes had excellent breading as well, likely a cornmeal style. However, the breading and the tomatoes itself could have used more seasoning. There is a spicy mayo-like sauce available, which presumably goes with the tomatoes.

A go-to meal here may include a fried (crispy) chicken po'boy with some hush puppies or cornbread.

Head to South and check them out! 8/10
