Salt & Straw (Los Angeles)

Salt & Straw Ice Cream has expanded to California! The LA spot is located on N Larchmont Blvd in Los Angeles, CA.

I headed to Southern California to shoot a ton of video, but the first stop of my 2015 SoCal trip landed me back at an old Portland favorite. Yup, the Salt & Straw business that started as a tiny ice cream cart has now landed a scoop shop in LA. While some of the core flavors from Portland can also be found here, this spot also focuses on local California ingredients, meaning there will be flavors unique to this location. Thus, you'll have to head to Los Angeles to get most of these flavors.

July was Berry Month, and this spot featured flavors such as Birthday Cakes & Blackberries, Goat Cheese and Ginger Boysenberry Jam,and California Raspberry Sorbet.

I went with a split scoop of the Stumptown Coffee & Compartes Love Nuts and the Avocado/Strawberry Sherbet. The "love nuts" in the coffee ice cream add wonderful texture and create a mocha almond fudge-like experience. The avocado/strawberry sherbet uses Strawberry Vanilla Bean jam from Laura Ann's Jams. As advertised, the jam is the star, and the avocado brings out an awesome creamy experience.

It was awesome to discover the guy taking my order (Ian) used to work at a couple of the Portland scoop shops and at the push cart. Small world.

Predictably, the prices here are higher than the Portland spots. A single scoop is $4.90 and a double scoop is $6.90.

Glad I was finally able to check out the Larchmont location! While I likely see myself sticking with the Portland lineup, I'm glad I sampled the LA spot for science. 8.5/10
