Kart Mama

Kart Mama is located on SW 9th Ave (in between Alder and Washington) in downtown Portland, Oregon.

I basically walked downtown searching for some new carts to try. Always down to try a cart with some down home cooking. On my visit, mac & cheese and burgers were on the menu.

All burgers start with a 1/3 lb patty and have toasted buns. The Fire Breather ($7) packs cheddar and a few pickled sliced jalapenos in there.

Generally, when I see a description like "jalapenos smushed in," I expect the jalapenos to be poking out of a cheesy burger, or falling off the burger like an avalanche of mild heat. Instead, perhaps 5-6 sliced jalapenos on some cheese. And woohoo, a dill pickle spear on the side!

(Note that I didn't ask for anything extra added to my burger. I wanted to see what the product would be like when ordered as is on the menu.)

Lettuce, raw onions, grilled onions, and jalapenos are no charge. Fifty cents more if you want tomatoes, cheese, or cheese sauce. Roasted garlic and bacon set you back an additional dollar each.

Frankly, I'd want some extra filler to my burger automatically. Put the lettuce, onions, and tomatoes on there by default for no charge and make that burger stand proud. Grilled onions, bacon, and cheese could be deemed extra charges.

I must give props to the burger overall. Nice toasted buns, juicy meat, melted cheese. For the price, it just seemed too ordinary and left me wanting more...much more.

There is a "Mac Daddy" burger that puts some of the cart-made mac and cheese on a burger. Now that sounds epic. Add bacon to that for internet winning.

This cart has promise, but I think for this go-around, it'll just be an OK experience for me. 5/10
