Creme de la Creme

NOTE: Creme de la Creme has permanently moved to Seattle, effective September 24, 2011. I'm privileged that I got to try their food before they left.)

Creme de la Creme is a food "bus" located in the Good Food Here food pod in Portland, Oregon. They serve French-inspired dishes, including escargot, French Onion Soup, a French dip sandwich, and a Croque Monsieur.

Menu (as of mid-September 2011)

I ordered their Croque Monsieur ($7): broiled Gruyere and bechamel atop a rustic ham sandwich, served with organic tossed greens.

I love the wax paper...look at the "Merci" on the bottom right corner!

Cross-section, you know it!
I patiently waited the 8-10 minutes for this order. It's a more time-consuming dish than the other items on the menu. But it was worth the wait. There's just something to broiled cheese that is so comforting, so blissful, that everything around you may just go black. It's just you and the food having that intimate moment. Yeah, that was the case with the Croque Monsieur here. It's been a while since I had the sandwich, yet I still hear the awesome crunch of that bread in my head (don't worry, I don't hear voices or anything). A bit of stone ground mustard in between gave the sandwich an extra tangy dimension. Unfortunately, the greens were way overdressed. They were just so saturated with oil and vinegar that I largely bypassed that portion of the meal.

Extremely high marks for the sandwich and friendly service, with a slight deduction for the overdressed salad. Still a very good score overall! 7.5/10
