The Egg Carton

(Second Review -- July 2012)

The Egg Carton is located at the Carts on Foster food pod (SE 52nd and Foster) in Portland, Oregon. Sarah Arkwright heads this cart. Her husband, Tim, may also be there for assistance on certain days. With me on one of those all-day breakfast benders, this was the ideal stop.

When I visited in early June, the hours of operation were still very limited, usually Thu-Sun from around 10-3. Sarah has plans to eventually start a Wed-Sun schedule (or equivalent), and possibly open around 8:30 a.m.

For now, some menu items may change up weekly. I came for the "FoPo Cristo" this time. Two pieces of French toast hold eggs, ham, bacon, Canadian bacon, cheddar, strawberry jam, and sweet/spicy mustard. Yeah, mustard in a Monte Cristo. At this time, Sarah simply uses Texas toast for the French toast. Right before service, this cristo gets a light dusting of powdered sugar.

As I mentioned to Sarah and Tim, the mustard really made this one a winner for me. Getting the lovely sweet and savory balance is awesome enough. The mustard adds a little zip and tang, the extra flavor dimension I crave that may be overlooked in other Monte Cristos. Perfect browning on the French toast here, so pleasing to look at. More importantly, a lovely amount of meat, eggs, cheese, and condiments for the thickness of bread used.

I won't lie, the other menu items, such as Eggs Benedict and French toast (100% maple syrup option), also piqued my interest, even though I believe I was on my third breakfast of the day. They have coffee from Cellar Door Coffee Roasters. This panda is a true breakfast glutton.

Some menu items may still be on there week to week
Not sure right now, though
I may have just had a small portion of the menu, but I'll be back for some other items in the future! Of note, the "Ronald" is a sausage, egg, and chese English muffin sandwich with an intriguing combination of maple syrup and Dijon mustard. Sounds pretty dang cool to me! Check out The Egg Carton's FB page for further updates to the menu!
