Big Top Waffles

(UPDATE 3/28/12: Big Top Waffles closed this past Sunday, 3/25. I wish the owners well in their future endeavors. They will be missed!)

Big Top Waffles is located in the Mississippi Marketplace at the corner of N Mississippi Ave. and Skidmore St. They offer four savory waffle choices and four sweet waffle options. They will even run a special each day. Savory orders come with a 10-grain or a cornbread waffle, while a Belgian waffle (likely a Brussels-style) accompanies sweet options.

Menu
Craving something sweet, I ordered their "Ring Leader" ($5), a Belgian waffle topped with Greek yogurt, sliced bananas, sliced strawberries, granola, and honey.

"Ring Leader" from Big Top Waffles
The waffle was perfectly cooked, golden brown and firm on the outside, soft on the inside. I'm usually not a fan of Greek yogurt due to its tangy nature, but it really worked here because the honey, granola, and fruit all packed enough sweetness to produce a balanced bite. The fruit also made this a refreshing meal on a hot September day. The crunchy granola was the icing on the waffle here. That much-desired textural contrast brought the dish full-circle. A very nice portion for $5, and lovely presentation as well.

Big points if a place can get me to like something I would not normally eat (in this case, Greek yogurt). I'm definitely a fan of Big Top Waffles and will return in the future for a savory waffle. High marks on that may just push them into the prestigious 9+ rankings. 8.75/10
