Pupuseria La Miguelena

Pupuseria La Miguelena is a Salvadoran food cart located at the Cartlandia food pod in Portland, Oregon. Zoyla, the woman that made pupusas at La Cocina de Chepe, opened this cart in April.

I was at the Cartlandia pod in the evening for a change, quite the rare sight. Yet, on that Sunday in May, many carts were still going strong. Pupusas sounded pretty darn good after driving for a few hundred miles in the Northwest.

I got a pupusa filled with beans, cheese, and pork ($2.50). It came with some type of pickled slaw (curtido?) and hot sauce on the side. When getting a takeout order, the slaw comes in a small Ziploc-like bag, while the hot sauce stays in a small container.

Zoyla's pupusa mastery shines through, from the proper amounts of beans, cheese, and pork, to constructing the actual thick corn tortilla. The pupusa stayed on the flattop long enough so the exterior could gain some color. The savory filling and pupusa came to me extremely fresh (still temperature-hot), so this panda smartened up for a change and used a fork.

The bite of the pickled vegetables worked well with the pupusa. I inquired about the hot sauce, and they actually use Japanese peppers (for more heat) instead of Mexican chiles. I can still easily handle more heat, but this was quite good.

There are still some menu items here that sound amazing. I'll have to return and try them out! 8/10
