Quaker Steak & Lube (CO)

Quaker Steak and Lube has many franchises in multiple U.S. states. But unfortunately, there's no Oregon location yet. When I found out there was a Quaker Steak in Westminster, Colorado, I had to go and conquer their Triple Atomic Wings challenge!

The original Atomic Wing challenge's popularity had probably grown a millionfold since Adam Richman made quick work of it in season one of Man v. Food. Quaker Steak & Lube then rolled out a Triple Atomic Wing challenge:

First, you must eat five Atomic wings (150,000 Scoville units) to qualify and win a free bumper sticker. Then, you must eat six Triple Atomic wings (~500,000 Scovilles) to get a free shirt. No time limit. No problem, sign me up! And I goaded my friend into doing it as well. Vintage peer pressure!

The atomic wings arrived. One of the boxes contained an extra (sixth) wing, so I took it. In a couple minutes, the wings were done. The atomic sauce, which uses habanero peppers, hit quickly.

I then asked for the Triple Atomic. Since it's cooked to order, that gave more time for the atomic sauce to keep kicking my face. I enjoyed it. I also smiled watching my friend struggle through the atomic wings -- but he did it. Score two for man on that one.

Me with the Triple Atomic wings!
Vintage protective gloves!
I went solo on the Triple Atomic. Oh, and it comes with gloves! The triple atomic sauce has ghost peppers in it, woohoo! There's a strong, pleasant fruitiness at the start, then the heat of the ghost pepper builds and starts destroying your mouth. Accordingly, I love the triple atomic more than the regular atomic.

For my loyal blog readers, here's my video taking these wings to school:

I also ate six Buckeye BBQ wings. Hey, I was hungry! A lovely sweet BBQ sauce here.

Got my bumper sticker. Got my T-shirt. A double victory here.

Katie was our server, and she did an excellent job. Only two months on the job at the time. I say start thinking of promoting her.

They have AYCE (all-you-can-eat) wings on Tuesdays (Happy Hour only). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take advantage of that promotion. Maybe next time.

Quaker Steak & Lube also has healthy options, another nice bonus! I wish there was one close by so I could try more the other wing sauces on the menu. Very meaty wings, each receiving an excellent coat of wing sauce. Pretty dang good for a national chain. 7.5/10
