Local Motive

Local Motive is a seafood cart located in a small pod near SW Moody and Abernathy in Portland, Oregon. A mother-daughter tandem (Jeannette and Brittany) head this cart. They love seafood, and the waterfront is a fairly unsaturated area for food carts (try comparing that with downtown Portland). And so Local Motive was born in Fall 2011.

Local Motive is committed to using environmentally friendly (sustainable) products, local ingredients (right down to Pacific Northwest fish and shellfish), and non-GMO oils.

Menu (January 2012)
Another menu near the ordering window!
I ordered a couple of items off their menu. The seafood cake ($3) uses Dungeness crab meat and bay shrimp, rolled in panko bread crumbs, and deep fried. A pleasing presentation: the golden brown seafood cake lies on a small bed of spinach, with a homemade tartar sauce on the side. The cake itself was extremely fragile, with spot-on seasoning.

The seafood chowder ($3.50 small; $6 large) starts with their potato and corn chowder recipe, with clams, Dungeness crab, and bay shrimp added at the last minute to prevent overcooking. At my request, fresh cracked black pepper topped this one. I loved the preparation of this beige-colored chowder. Just a perfect consistency. Adding the seafood at the end assured it would avoid any rubbery, overcooked fate. I would have liked a bit more seafood in there, just to drive home the point of a seafood chowder.

Other favorite menu items include the Dungeness Crab Melt sandwich ($6 for a half, $9 for a whole sandwich) and the Albacore Salad sandwich (half for $5, full for $8). If you're a seafood lover, check out Local Motive and try their food out ASAP! 8.5/10
