Miss Kate's Southern Kitchen

(Added new photos on 2/4/12!)

From one Mississippi to another!

Miss Kate's Southern Kitchen, located at the Mississippi Marketplace food pod in Portland, Oregon, serves up comforting Southern cooking straight from Vicksburg, Mississippi! They are one of the newest carts in Portland, opening on MLK Day (1/16/12). Having visited Louisiana and Mississippi many years ago, I fell in love with Southern food. I had to check this cart out, despite all the snow and slush that blanketed Portland that week!

Yup, look at the snow!

Awesome use of kitchen utensils!
Charles is the owner, and Miss Kate was his "mamaw" (Southern slang for "grandma"). Opening the cart was a way to pay tribute to one of the most important people in his life. All recipes in this cart have Miss Kate's wonderful touch.

I came for breakfast on Charles' third day of business. Breakfast meant biscuits and gravy! For $3, I received a soft fluffy biscuit, cut in half, blanketed with flavorful bacon gravy. Yes. Bacon gravy. The bits of bacon popped out from the gravy pool, as if to say "hi" before I scarfed everything down like a carnivorous beast. I can see why Charles mentioned the dish is his most popular breakfast item to date.

So easy to cut through that great B&G!
Knowing that one small breakfast wasn't enough, I added a couple of beignets to my order for $1.50 more. Light, pillowy rectangular doughnuts laced with powdered sugar and put in a small white paper bag. Awesome stuff here. Satisfying and not overly sweet. Yes, it can get messy. The way the powdered sugar got on me, I looked like I was on the losing end of a food fight in a bakery. OK, not quite.

Beignets...asked for two, but hey, I got an extra one, woohoo!

Charles let me sample some of the pimiento cheese he uses on his pimiento cheese and bacon sandwiches -- a popular lunch menu item. I never had pimiento cheese before, but it's delicious. The creamy orange-colored cheese is mild, and the diced red pepper adds flavor and texture.

In the coming weeks, Charles will have a much larger menu. Their regular hours will generally be Wednesday to Sunday, from about 9 a.m. to at least 4 p.m. (through 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays). Check out Miss Kate's Southern Kitchen ASAP! 8/10
