Green Apple

Green Apple, located in the Salem Center Mall, offers self-serve frozen yogurt. There are 12 flavors to choose from, with flavors rotating in and out every so often.

Basically, get a container (small or large) at the beginning of the line, get however much frozen yogurt you want, add toppings, then pay at the end. It is priced by the ounce, so the more ice cream you get, the more you pay. These were the flavors on May 17, 2011:

There are 12 flavors, each paired up. Notice there is a third lever (the middle lever) on each of the machines. If you pull down on the middle lever, you will get a swirl hybrid of the two flavors in that machine. At least each of the two flavors, when combined, do go together very well.

I got a small cup and chose four flavors to sample: Country Vanilla, Green Apple, New York Cheesecake, and Mountain Blackberry. No toppings for me, but if you wanted any, here they are:

I forgot to take a picture of my yogurt, but the container weighed about seven and a half ounces after it was all said and done (so I didn't really get an extremely large amount). About $3 for all that, which is not too bad, considering I got more yogurt at Green Apple than I did at Napoleon's -- and for a cheaper price.

All the flavors I had were great. Personally, I'm biased toward the vanilla, just a clean flavor there, no frills. I think the blackberry would be my next favorite. With frozen yogurt being much healthier than a gelato or ice cream, this is a good place to go if you're watching your weight but need that sweet tooth fix. There are tables to sit at, but Green Apple is really not meant to be a dine-in place. It's in the mall, so people will likely get their yogurt and take it to go while walking around the mall some more.

But in the grand scheme of things, this place lacks any type of flavor or presence that would make me want to keep coming back here. I can get frozen yogurt just about anywhere, and Green Apple failed to separate itself from the pack. 5/10
