Stanich's

Stanich's, on NE Fremont St. (Portland, Oregon), is a bar/restaurant known for their burgers. In fact, several years ago, AOL picked the "Top 15 Burgers in the U.S.A.," and Stanich's made that top 15, along with burger giants like In-n-Out Burger, The Vortex, and Thurman Cafe.

Sorry for the bad picture, but Stanich's is on this "Burgers to Eat Before You Die" list

I basically got scolded by the servers that I can't take pictures of the grill area or the staff. I did apologize, not knowing about the rule.

Anyway, I got the burger that is touted as one of the world's best: their "Special" burger with everything on it. It has one ground chuck beef patty, fried egg, ham, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and various condiments. It came with a complementary bag of chips. I took pictures in my car and at home.

Yeah I put it on a Papa John's paper plate.
But hey, look at that burger. Layers of awesomeness.
I thought the burger was pretty good. Each ingredient brought that much more flavor to the dance here. And look at the layers of that burger when you cut into it. So many colors, so many layers. That is burger awesomeness. I also like the sesame seed bun choice.

However, I had a couple of concerns with the burger. While the top bun remained firm, the bottom part of the bun was basically turning to mush when I got to the car -- and was even closer to mush by the time I got home. The burger was also very messy, in a bad way. It felt greasy and unappetizing. Sure, I did get it from a place that basically runs as a tavern or a bar, but that should be no excuse.

Stanich's may have gotten awards for its "Special," and their regular burger may not be as messy, but I'm likely to go elsewhere for a great burger next time.

Don't get me wrong, the burger was good. However, I just did not feel "at home" with the decor (heck, it's a tavern/bar setting). Too much stuff (namely flags/banners of college teams) on the wall. The place also seemed quite cramped. The staff were nice, but all I'll remember is them telling me to politely stop taking pictures.

Anyway, the burger may be around a 4 or a 5 (out of 10), but the place itself decreases that overall rating from there. 2/10
