Koi Catering & Takeout

Koi Catering & Takeout is a food truck located on Ward Avenue in Honolulu, Hawaii -- adjacent to Hawaiian Electric Company and across from the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena. Founded in September 2002 by Marcos Rebibis, Jr., and Lendy Rebibis, Koi serves upscale plate lunches that earned them Honolulu Magazine's Best Lunchwagon award in 2006. Today, with the help of chef Eric Bond, this family-run lunch wagon continues to serve gourmet plate lunches to happy, hungry customers!

I had the opportunity to sample several dishes from their impressive menu. First up, a mini Garlic Chipotle Shrimp plate with brown rice and tossed salad ($5). The shrimp were perfectly cooked, with top-notch seasoning. The lovely garlic and the smoky chipotle came through and did not overpower the taste buds. It's definitely an item I'd order again. The only downside was the size of the shrimp...little dinky guys that I devoured in mere seconds. But considering it was $5, it still falls within the realm of reasonable pricing.

Next up, the mini Baked Chicken with Mushroom Sauce ($4). The bone-in, skin-on chicken thigh was fairly moist. The mushroom sauce had great flavor, a thin gravy-like consistency wonderfully coating the chicken.

Finally, the mini Braised Short Ribs ($6). The meat was extremely tender and full of flavor. To get maybe two or three pieces of ribs just left me (and my family) wanting more. Maybe I need to beg for food next time -- or volunteer to take orders during the lunch rush to earn a larger lion's share of food. Or I guess I could get a regular plate, right?

There's no denying that high-quality food comes out of this truck. As of right now, Koi is only open on the weekdays for lunch. Check them out when you can...enjoy some of this quality plate lunch grub! 7.75/10

  1. The food looks delicious and the price is too cheap. Aside from that, the food they serve is not that bad, considering its price. catering nyc
