Thurman Cafe

The Thurman Cafe is a dive bar located on Thurman Ave. in Columbus, Ohio. A family-owned business running since 1942, this place is known for their massive burgers. The Thurman Cafe has been a popular place for the Ohio State University college crowd, and it's all about getting "Thurmanized" here!

The Thurman Cafe was also one of the featured spots on the Columbus episode of "Man v. Food" (first season of the series).

To get properly Thurmanized, I went with the Thurman Burger ($9.99): "our head honcho overloaded with ham, mozzarella, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, sauteed onions, pickle, peppers, and mayo, with chips and a pickle spear." All beef patties at The Thurman Cafe are 3/4 of a pound!

Cross-section!
This was a delicious -- and HUGE -- burger. While the 12 oz. patty was a bit overcooked for my liking (I prefer it a little more pink in the center, not well done), the patty still surprisingly retained some juiciness. To me, the best part was the onions and mushrooms...they just added a lovely depth of flavor here. I also wish the cheese was melted, but that's merely a personal preference. A very good price for the amount of food you get.

Other interesting menu items include the Thurmandelphia (basically burger meets gyro), the Western burger (bacon, cheddar, and tangy BBQ sauce), and the Hot and Spicy Salsa burger (open-faced on Texas Toast, with mozzarella, salsa, lettuce, and sour cream). Check out The Thurman Cafe and get Thurmanized today! 7/10
