Waka Sushi

Waka Sushi is a Japanese food cart located near the corner of SW 9th and Alder in downtown Portland, Oregon. While their main selling item is sushi (various types, no less), Waka Sushi also sells other rice dishes as well.

Menu (November 2011)
I went to my fallback sushi choice and got a small order of spicy tuna sushi ($4): fresh tuna is mixed with a spicy creamy sauce (likely sriracha and mayonnaise). It is then placed on a bed of rice and rolled inverted-style, with the rice on the outside. The rice gets a sprinkling of white sesame seeds on the outside, then served in a petite plastic container with wasabi and yellow pickled ginger.

I watched the woman operating this cart skillfully roll the sushi. Nope, couldn't do that, even though I'm Japanese...I'll stick with eating, writing about, and photographing food, thank you very much. I liked the presentation, and the container used here was really the same that many sushi houses use on takeout orders.

Spicy tuna sushi (Waka Sushi)

The most important part here: the tuna was fresh. No off-putting fishy smell here. The rice was cooked perfectly and was room-temperature to the touch. The sesame seeds added to the presentation and provided that toasty nutty tone for added dimension. I could have dealt with more spice than what I was given, but really a nice appetizer here. Considering a small gets me six pieces of sushi (and for $4), that's a darn good deal to me.

A good experience here! Check Waka Sushi out and get your sushi fix! 7/10
